The Three Tires You Need To Know For ATV Riding
Your ATV is capable of handling a wide range of terrain, but your tires are not. Different types of terrain require special tires to provide you with a smooth and safe riding experience. All-Terrain
These tires are your general, basic style. They are not built with a given type of terrain in mind and are meant to be a solid, all-purpose option for your average rider. This is the opposite of the other types of tires, which are made for a specific style of turf.
While these are a general style, there are some differences between the all-terrain ATV tires. Some may be able to offer better traction, for example. This can make it easier to tackle slippery surfaces, such as mud. But they won't be able to offer the intense amount of traction you need for more extreme terrain, such as highly rocky areas.
Your standard ATV will come with these tires. They offer a broad range of success for soft turf and hard ground. Beginner riders stick with these, but everyone can benefit from having a set of them in their arsenal.
Sand Tires
These tires are also known as paddle tires. That term comes from their unique paddle-like ridges. This distinct design helps them better tackle sand. Sand can be difficult to travel on because it easily moves under the heavy weight of an ATV. The paddle tire pushes sand backwards to give you traction. It utilizes similar principles to how a steam boat moves on the water.
While these tires are great for conquering sand, it's important to note that they struggle in terrain that is firmer than sand. It's not just that they won't perform as well (though that is true). Taking these tires on terrain that is not sand can actually destroy the tire, making it so you won't be able to use them anywhere. If you enjoy riding on sand, you'll want to invest in these tires. But be sure to only use them on the turf for which they’re intended!
Mud Tires
These tires are for those who love making ATV treks over muddy and/or watery ground. They utilize oversized knobs, which help them grab large chunks of terrain deeply as you hit the throttle. Muddy terrain lacks a consistent, uniform surface. Some areas are firmer and drier, while others are softer and muddier. These tires are designed to be able to roll with the punches as the terrain changes firmness.
These tires can also be great for snowy and slushy conditions. Their well-defined lugs lend themselves to even weight distribution. You'll slip around much less on these tires.
As is the case with the sand tires, you'll want to avoid taking these tires on stiff and firm terrain. It'll cause damage to the tires, so stick with muddy and snowy conditions.
