Yamaha Motor Company is the offspring of the larger Yamaha Corporation, which was established by Torakusu Yamaha in 1887 as a manufacturer of musical instruments like organs and pianos. You can see this legacy in the company’s logo: three interlocked piano tuning forks in a circle.
After World War II, several Japanese manufacturers began to diversify their offerings in order to make up for lost revenue during the war. They also wanted to make use of wartime manufacturing machines by altering them for different purposes. Yamaha’s president during this time was Genichi Kawakami, and he decided to add the production of small engines to his company’s manufacturing lines.
By 1955, this expansion led to the Yamaha Motor Company splitting off from Yamaha Corporation in order to focus production on motorsports vehicles, specifically two-stroke engine motorcycles. Yamaha began to produce four-stroke engines in 1968, further diversifying their motorcycle offerings.
1980s Expansion

Yamaha released the WaveRunner 500 in 1986, which became an extremely popular personal watercraft model that changed the face of marine recreation for good.
