Beginnings
1837 marks the year that founder John Deere began his own small tool repair and manufacturing business in the town of Grand Detour, Illinois. Having moved from Vermont, where he’d apprenticed and worked as a blacksmith for years, he found no shortage of blacksmithing work in his new home, repairing farm tools.
Soon, Deere began to develop his own tools that built on and improved existing designs. His first steel plow was meant to be a stronger version of the existing cast-iron plows that failed to adequately handle the sticky clay that underlay Midwestern prairies. His business then blossomed and managed to last through some serious economic depressions until his death in 1886, leaving the company in the capable hands of his son, Charles.
20th Century Developments
The tractor came into prominence at the start of the 20th century, and Deere & Company joined in at the behest of then-president William Butterworth, John’s son-in-law, who had replaced Charles upon his death in 1907. The company’s first truly successful tractor was the John Deere Model D, released in 1923.

During World War II, Deere & Company joined the war effort by producing an array of different parts for aircraft and tanks at their factory.
